reports that there’s much to learn from other countries around breakfast. The U.S. isn’t likely to rank high on the list of healthfulness. “The most healthful breakfast foods are located in the countries around the Mediterranean Sea like Israel, Cyprus, and Greece,” says Brigitte Kochavi, RD, and Israel rep for the American Overseas Dietetic Association “The Mediterranean diet emphasizes foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, including whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, olive oil, and garlic consumption.” Says Anne VanBeber, PhD, RD, LD, a professor and chair of the department of nutritional sciences at Texas Christian University, “the more healthful versions of breakfast that clients enjoy in the U.S. can include whole grain breads with low-fat cheese or nut butter for a nutrient-dense carb with a good protein source or low-fat yogurt combined with fruit for a combination of protein, fat, and carbohydrate.”
